Six tabs on what the sensor does with photons and what sits in front of it: the measured data of three Leica bodies, the SL3-S pixel shift, the M11 Triple Resolution, diffraction (for each sensor and mode, how far to stop down, how many megapixels it really delivers and when multishot is worth it), the ND filter and its infrared leakage, which the sensor's own filter does not always stop, and that same optical stack seen through ray tracing, where thickness and angle of incidence decide the corners.

Q3
SL3-S
The Q3 is measured on 13 effective bits (suffix _13 on the website), which slightly trims its dynamic-range ceiling relative to the M11 although they share the sensor: with about 2 e⁻ per DN at ISO 100 (14-bit scale), its quantisation step is ≈4 e⁻, of the order of its base-ISO read noise (4.3 e⁻). ISO 50, 64 and 80 on the SL3-S are software-extended: the sensor keeps the ISO 100 analogue gain and the RAW is scaled afterwards, so they give up as much as 1 EV of highlights (ISO 50) for a read-noise improvement of barely 0.26 EV. The "unity-gain ISO" row is the ISO at which 1 DN equals 1 e⁻; it coincides with the gain switch on the M11 and the SL3-S.
Q3 43. It carries the same 60 Mpx sensor and the same 13-bit pipeline as the 28 mm Q3, so the "Q3" series on this page applies to it as an approximation (the export embedded here has no separate Q3 43 series). What changes is the lens: 43 mm f/2 instead of 28 mm f/1.7, one stop less light per pixel and a narrower field, and that does alter the astrophotography conclusions below.
Ruido de lectura referido a la entrada
Input-referred read noise
Read noise in rms electrons, obtained by dividing the noise measured in DN by the system gain (DN per electron) at each ISO. It is the quantity comparable between cameras, unlike the curve in DN, which depends on each model's bit depth and gain.
Qué ISO poner: veredicto por cuerpo e ISO
Which ISO to set: verdict by body and ISO
Pick a body and an ISO and the page reads the two series for you: read noise per pixel and at equal area, remaining dynamic range, which side of the dual gain you are on, whether the firmware filters the RAW and what it costs to push in development instead of raising ISO in camera. The chosen ISO (solid line) and that camera's switching ISO (dashed) are marked on both charts.

Inverted triangle: the firmware applies noise reduction to the RAW at that ISO. Hollow circle: extended ISO, outside the analogue range. Diamond: digital scaling and filtering at once. Equal-area normalisation multiplies the values of the 60 Mpx sensors by √(60.3/24.6) ≈ 1.57, the factor by which read noise combines when binning pixels up to the SL3-S pixel size.
Puntos de conmutación de la ganancia dual
Dual-gain switching points
The sharp step in each curve marks the ISO at which the sensor switches to high conversion gain: the M11 at ISO 200, the Q3 at ISO 400 and the SL3-S at ISO 640. From that point read noise falls below 2 e⁻ and the camera behaves almost ISO-invariantly: raising ISO further in camera adds little over lifting exposure in development, and costs dynamic range in the highlights.
Pushing in development against raising ISO in camera
Each cell is the extra deep-shadow noise, in EV, paid for leaving the camera at the row's ISO and lifting exposure k stops in development instead of raising ISO in camera: log₂ of the ratio between read noise at the row's ISO and at the ISO k stops higher. The rule the table gives: below the gain switch, as soon as the push crosses the step it costs more than a full stop (between 1.5 and 2.9 EV); above it, about half a stop for every three stops of push. It measures deep-shadow noise (read regime), not mid-tone SNR, which does not depend on ISO.

Green: under 0.3 EV, push freely and keep the highlights. Amber: between 0.3 and 0.7 EV. Red: over 0.7 EV, raise ISO in camera. † The target ISO already has firmware-filtered RAW: the figure is misleading and in astrophotography you should not go there.
Rango dinámico fotográfico (PDR)
Photographic dynamic range (PDR)
Claff's PDR measures the stops between saturation and the signal level at which the signal-to-noise ratio drops below 20 over a circle of confusion normalised to image size. It is already area-normalised, so it is directly comparable between cameras of different resolution.
M11Q3SL3-S
At base ISO the M11 reaches 11.8 EV (ISO 64) against 11.1 EV for the Q3 (ISO 100) and 10.45 EV for the SL3-S (ISO 100). The Low-Light EV parameter the website computes, a low-light performance index derived from this curve, ties the M11 (10.62) with the SL3-S (10.64) and leaves the Q3 at 10.31.
Calculadora de relación señal/ruido
Signal-to-noise calculator
Per-pixel model: the signal is the photoelectron flux times pixel area and time; the noise combines in quadrature the photon noise, the dark-current noise and the read noise interpolated from the series above at the chosen ISO. The normalised column refers the result to the SL3-S pixel area, so the three cameras are compared at equal output size.
The flux values are indicative and depend on optics, transmission and quantum efficiency; the presets are declared at f/2.8 and also set time and ISO, and the aperture field scales the flux by (2.8/N)². The "2 s untracked" preset is the one that shows the read-regime boundary, where the SL3-S stands apart. Dark current is assumed to double every 6 °C.

t_phot = 4·σr²/(F·A): from there read variance is under 20 % of the total and pixel size stops counting. t_sat = usable well at the chosen ISO / ((F + D)·A), with usable well = fwc·ISO_base/ISO; that is the sky background, stars saturate earlier. t_dark = σr²/(D·A), with dark current D already temperature-corrected: beyond it, take darks. Green: the chosen time meets that condition; amber or red: it does not.
Cómo leer el resultado
How to read the result
When photon noise dominates (photon-limited regime), the signal-to-noise ratio at equal area is the same for the three sensors except for differences in quantum efficiency, and pixel size stops mattering. Only when read variance outweighs photon variance, that is, with very short exposures or very dark skies, does the SL3-S advantage appear, and it is about 0.3 EV. Stacking N frames multiplies SNR by √N in either regime.
Cómo leer las curvas de PhotonsToPhotos
How to read the PhotonsToPhotos curves
Curve in DN with slope 1 on a log-log scale
Noise in DN grows proportionally to ISO: the dominant source lies before the amplifier (photodiode and conversion) and is amplified with the signal. It indicates photosite-noise dominance and ISO-invariant behaviour.
Curve that flattens at low ISO
A constant component in DN, added after the gain, dominates: the analogue-to-digital converter. Raising ISO in camera does reduce relative noise until the curve regains slope 1.
Downward step within the analogue range
Dual conversion-gain switching: the sensor changes the capacitance of the read node and reduces input-referred noise. Best to work at or above that ISO when the scene is dark.
Jagged curve
Digital scaling or a second amplifier for the intermediate ISOs; the intermediate values add no real analogue gain.
Hollow symbols
Extended ISOs outside the analogue range. The low ones clip highlights without gaining range; the high ones are digital multiplication.
Upward triangle, inverted triangle, diamond
Digital scaling, noise reduction applied to the RAW, and both at once. The inverted triangle is the marker that matters in astrophotography: a filtered RAW can wipe out faint stars.
Conclusiones por uso
Conclusions by use
Paisaje a ISO base
Astrophotography and night landscape
SL3-S between ISO 640 and 3200: best read noise at equal area, about 0.3 EV over the M11, but only in short frames or very dark skies, where read noise rules (in the calculator, the "Rural sky, 2 s untracked" preset). Avoid ISO 6400 or more: the RAW is filtered and faint stars are at risk.
M11 from ISO 200: ISO-invariant, unfiltered RAW across the whole range and 60 Mpx. In long tracked stacks, where sky background dominates, it matches the SL3-S. The maximum untracked frame time is set by sidereal drift, and the stacking is covered in the Siril manual.
Q3 and Q3 43 from ISO 400: in the read regime they sit 0.55 EV behind the SL3-S at equal area at ISO 1600 (1.97 e⁻ against 1.35), nearly twice the M11's gap, because the 13 bits add quantisation noise on the same sensor; clean RAW up to ISO 12800. The 28 mm f/1.7 Q3 is the better suited to the whole Milky Way; the Q3 43 (43 mm f/2) collects one stop less light per pixel and covers a narrower field: less suited to the full arch, well suited to moonlit night landscape and to galactic-core detail.
The real difference will be set by the lens (aperture, corner coma) and by dark current, not by the sensor: with the calculator's assumption (0.003 e⁻/µm²/s at 20 °C) it equals read noise at ISO 1600 after 17 s on the SL3-S, 26 s on the M11 and 37 s on the Q3, and it doubles every 6 °C. The calculator's t_dark column recomputes it at your temperature.
Landscape at base ISO
M11 wins on dynamic range (1.35 EV over the SL3-S at base ISO; at ISO 1600 all three tie at around 8 EV, see the data sheet) and on resolution (1.57× linear) up to f/5.6, its critical aperture; at f/8 the diffraction ceiling, 1,865/N² megapixels, leaves it at about 29 effective Mpx against the SL3-S's nominal 24.6, and at f/11 (15 Mpx) they tie (diffraction).
SL3-S compensates with multishot (96 Mpx, full colour per position, noise averaging) and bracketing, with a static scene, on a tripod or handheld (the handheld merge delivers 70 to 80 % of the ideal averaging, measured in the multishot notebook), and under the same diffraction rule: the 96 Mpx are only exploited up to f/4.4, at f/5.6 they deliver about 59 and from f/8 multishot adds full colour and less noise, not resolution. It brings precise focusing, a 5.76 Mpx viewfinder, a tilting screen and a view of the polariser.
Q3 and Q3 43 offer the M11 sensor with the SL3-S viewfinder and screen. Fixed focal length: 28 mm or 43 mm.
What the data do not show
The "low-light body" label of the SL3-S does not hold at sensor level: photon noise per unit area does not depend on pixel size and the read noise of both designs is already around 1 e⁻. Its low-light advantage is operational: in-body stabilisation, phase-detection autofocus that works in fog and dusk, a gained-up viewfinder and fast readout. On a tripod with a static subject none of that comes into play.
Coast (humidity, spray, fog) is not sensor data either: SL3-S IP54 with sealed lenses, Q3 and Q3 43 IP52 with no lens changes, M11 uncertified. In all three cases, a sacrificial protective filter, acclimatisation inside the bag and a fresh-water cloth after every outing.
Método y fuentes
Method and sources
Input-referred read-noise and PDR series extracted from the data published by PhotonsToPhotos (William J. Claff) on 4 September 2026. The original abscissa is in exposure steps Ev and is converted with ISO = 3.125·2^Ev. Noise values are in log₂ of electrons and have been converted to rms electrons.
Area normalisation: when binning k pixels the signal adds and the noise combines in quadrature, so the equivalent read noise scales with √k and the signal-to-noise ratio with √k. With 60.3 and 24.6 Mpx on the same format, k = 2.45 and √k = 1.57. The noise chart, the data sheet, the ISO verdict and the calculator all use this same factor √(60.3/24.6); the ratio of pixel areas (5.94/3.76)² = 2.50 would give 1.58, a 1 % difference that comes from rounding the pixel pitch.
Unity gain: the unityEv datum of the series is the Ev at which 1 DN equals 1 e⁻ on the 14-bit scale in which PhotonsToPhotos expresses the DN of all three bodies (the Q3 included, although it records 13 bits); ISO = 3.125·2^unityEv. Check: 2¹⁴ times the e⁻/DN at base ISO in the data sheet gives 50,100, 33,200 and 98,600 e⁻, between 3 and 7 % above the measured well capacities, consistent with a white level somewhat below 16,383.
Reconciliation with the Triple Resolution tab (binning): there the M11 is modelled with FWC_ef 28,500 e⁻ and σr 1.5 e⁻; those are effective green-channel values after demosaicing, fitted to the measurements of the article that tab analyses. Here they are the PhotonsToPhotos input-referred per-pixel values (47,875 e⁻ and 1.06 e⁻ at ISO 1600). They are not directly comparable and both are correct in their own definition. The push penalties and the ISO verdict are read-noise ratios, valid in deep shadows; in the mid-tones photon noise rules and ISO changes nothing.
Well capacity: the fwc value of the series, at base ISO. Saturation at a given ISO is estimated as fwc·ISO_base/ISO. The SL3-S pixel pitch is taken as 5.94 µm (35.6 mm / 6000 px) and that of the M11 and Q3 as 3.76 µm.
Limitations: quantum efficiency is not in these series and is assumed equal for the three; the model's dark current is an editable assumption, not a measurement; the model does not include fixed pattern, banding or the processing response to long exposures.

1. Cómo funciona el multishot del SL3-S
1. How the SL3-S multishot works
It is a pixel-shift mode. The camera takes a sequence of exposures, shifting the sensor between each with the five-axis stabilisation system, and merges the frames into a single DNG in camera. The sensor has 24.6 MP natively; multishot offers 48 and 96 MP, with tripod and handheld variants. The resulting files measure 12000×8000 pixels.
A Bayer sensor samples only one colour per photodiode and the rest is interpolated. With four full-pixel shifts each point is recorded by one red, two green and one blue photodiode: chromatic interpolation and moiré disappear. That is the 48 MP variant (same grid, full RGB, better SNR). Adding half-pixel shifts doubles the sampling frequency on both axes: the 96 MP variant.

Variantes y límites
Variants and limits
Tripod: the shifts are executed by the IBIS in a controlled way. Faster merge.
Handheld: the algorithm uses natural hand tremor as random sub-pixel displacement, registers the frames and resolves the mosaic by correlation. Merge of about 12 s. Verified on firmware 4.2.0: it delivers the full 96 MP DNG, with a measured averaging efficiency of 70 to 80 % (section 2b).
Static scenes only: movement between exposures produces artefacts even though the algorithm tries to mask them.
The 96 MP mode has a practical limit of ISO 3200: read noise hampers sub-pixel registration.
The real resolution gain at 96 MP depends on the lens resolving above the native sensor's Nyquist limit (section 4).
Purpose: to fill the gap between this speed-oriented body (30 fps, high ISO, light files) and the 60 MP SL3. It serves art, architecture, landscape and unhurried portraiture.
2. Relación señal ruido
2. Signal-to-noise ratio
When averaging N exposures, shot noise (Poissonian) and read noise, uncorrelated between frames, are reduced by √N while the signal adds coherently. In the 48 MP mode each position is sampled 4 times: a theoretical improvement of factor 2, one stop of exposure. In the 96 MP mode the eight-frame budget is split between spatial frequency and averaging: each site of the fine grid receives around two measurements, the output pixel is somewhat cleaner than the native one and, reducing to equal area, nearly all the averaging of the eight frames is recovered (measured in section 2b).
Averaging only suppresses temporal noise. Fixed-pattern noise (gain or offset variation between photodiodes) is identical in every frame and is not reduced; that takes darks and flats, or dithering between frames so that the same scene point falls on different photodiodes.

Referencia: 4 tomas (48 MP) → 2×, un paso; 8 tomas (96 MP) → 2,83× ideal, paso y medio a igual área (medido a pulso: 2,3 a 2,5×, sección 2b); 64 tomas → 8×. Rendimientos decrecientes: doblar N añade siempre medio paso.
Solid line: the chosen merge, √(η·N); dashed, if η < 1: the ideal √N. Dot: the entered value of N. Reference: 4 frames (48 MP) → 2×, one stop; 8 frames (96 MP) → 2.83× ideal, one and a half stops at equal area (measured handheld: 2.3 to 2.5×, section 2b); 64 frames → 8×. Diminishing returns: doubling N always adds half a stop.
Lo que gana cada modo
What each mode gains
The two numbers of multishot: the 48 MP mode averages four frames, one clean stop of temporal noise per output pixel. The 96 MP one fires eight and, at equal output size, the measured handheld gain is 1.2 to 1.3 stops (a factor of 2.3 to 2.5 in σ, section 2b), against the stop and a half of the ideal √8; per fine-grid pixel the output is somewhat cleaner than native. Neither touches fixed-pattern noise.
Against raising ISO or lengthening the exposure: averaging four frames at ISO 1600 collects the same total light as a single frame at ISO 400 with four times the time, and the sequence lasts roughly the same. The difference lies in the highlights, which survive because each frame is exposed short, and in the subject, because each frame freezes what the quadruple exposure would smear. Since the SL3-S is almost ISO-invariant from 640, the equivalence holds well above that point; below it, raising ISO in camera still buys some read noise. Multishot is not a sensitivity trick: it is the way to spend four times the light without blowing the highlights.
The actual read noise per ISO of this sensor and the effect of stacking N frames are computed in the sensor data tab, which uses the PhotonsToPhotos measurements instead of the ideal √N above.

Two consecutive captures of the same scene, ISO 100, 1/500 s, f/5: the 96 MP multishot DNG (12032×8008, 14-bit Bayer mosaic, black 512, white 16383) and the 24 MP single frame. Method: green channel in raw, photon-transfer analysis on 32×32 tiles verified as flat (the residual after a plane fit must match a robust high-frequency estimator, Haar plus MAD); the multishot green plane is reduced by 2×2 averaging to the 24 MP grid, so both are compared at the same output spatial frequency.
Plausibility check: the variance-against-mean fit of the single frame gives a gain of at least 4.5 e⁻/DN (a lower bound, residual texture biases the slope upwards), that is a well of at least 73 ke⁻, compatible with the ~95 ke⁻ that follow from PhotonsToPhotos in the data tab.
SNR of the raw green channel over tiles verified as flat, same output scale. The two curves sit 6 to 8 dB apart almost constantly across the measurable range.
Result: at equal output scale multishot reduces σ by a factor of 2.3 to 2.5, stable from −3.9 to −1.6 EV below saturation, that is 7 to 8 dB or 1.2 to 1.3 stops of SNR. The ideal averaging eight frames is √8 = 2.83 (9 dB, a stop and a half): the handheld merge runs at 70 to 80 % of ideal efficiency, as if it averaged about six effective frames, a cost attributable to motion compensation. On a tripod a value closer to the ideal is to be expected, still to be measured.

That this is not smoothing is shown by the lag-1 autocorrelation of the residual: +0.002 in the multishot (white noise) against +0.054 in the single frame; spatial filtering would leave appreciable positive correlation. Moreover, even pixel by pixel at the native 96 MP scale each output photosite is cleaner than one of the single frame (13.3 against 17.1 DN), a sign that each site combines more than one measurement.
Limits of the measurement: below about −4 EV the scene lacks flat areas and the estimator is limited by real texture (a lower bound, not a value); fixed-pattern noise is not probed by this method; it is one pair, one firmware and one lens. Pending: the tripod pair, the dimensions and noise of the 48 MP file, and a grey card underexposed 5 to 6 EV for the read floor.
3. Color: qué mejora y qué no
3. Colour: what improves and what does not
In Bayer, chrominance is sampled at half the frequency of luminance and demosaicing reconstructs it by interpolation: false colour on high-contrast edges, chromatic moiré and loss of saturation in fine detail. With full-pixel shift each point gets direct R, G and B measurements; chromatic resolution equals luminance resolution and those artefacts disappear.
What does not change is colorimetry. The CFA filters are the same, with the same spectral sensitivities: effective gamut, metamerism and the accuracy of the conversion matrix to XYZ are identical. Spatial colour fidelity improves, not spectral fidelity.
For point sources (stars) the Bayer problem is real: a sub-pixel star landing on a single red or blue photodiode comes out with false colour or wrong brightness after demosaicing. Full RGB sampling corrects it, but on the sky registration breaks down because of sidereal drift (section 5).
4. Muestreo, Nyquist y escala angular
4. Sampling, Nyquist and angular scale
The sensor's Nyquist frequency is fN = 1/(2p) with p the pixel pitch. The 96 MP mode is equivalent to an effective pitch of p/2, which doubles fN. If the lens MTF at the native Nyquist frequency is already low, the 96 MP mode adds colour information but no detail.
Two things erase that detail before it reaches the sensor: diffraction, which depends only on the aperture and λ, and the lens aberrations. The first is worked out in detail in the diffraction and aperture tab, which assumes a perfect lens and gives the format's megapixel ceiling at each aperture. The second is what this calculator adds: a slider with the lens MTF at the native Nyquist, the only way to bring the lens you are actually going to mount into the count.

The Earth's rotation shifts the sky by 15.041 "/s · cos δ, with δ the declination. The multishot sequence lasts several seconds between long exposures, so sub-pixel registration breaks down without a tracking mount, and with tracking the ground moves relative to the sky. For the sky, conventional software stacking (section 6). The sequence budget in section 8 gives the exact figure: with 24 mm and eight one-second frames the sky travels more than two pixels while the multishot lasts, and that is enough for the merge to fail.
Deriva = 15,041 · cos δ ["/s] t1px = Escala / DerivaDrift = 15.041 · cos δ ["/s] t1px = Scale / Drift NPF ≈ (35·N + 30·p) / f [s] Regla 500500 rule = 500 / f [s]

Solid: seconds to the tolerated trail with the current parameters (logarithmic vertical axis). Dashed: NPF rule. Dot: entered focal length. At f = 24 mm and δ = 0, a star crosses a 5.94 µm pixel in about 3.4 s; any multishot sequence of several seconds exceeds that margin.
The 500 rule is an approximation from the 12 MP era; with a 5.94 µm pitch it overestimates the allowed time. NPF (Frédéric Michaud) accounts for aperture and pixel pitch; the full version adds a focal-length term and divides by cos δ.
Montura de seguimiento y Luna
Tracking mount and the Moon
With a tracking mount, drift stops being the problem and the atmosphere takes its place. The information the mode encodes is half fine-pixel displacements, 3 µm, which in angular scale is 3 µm/f: 1.5" at 400 mm, 0.8" at 800 mm. Seeing adds a differential distortion between areas of the field (the isoplanatic angle is a few arcseconds) that changes between the eight frames and that a rigid displacement model cannot compensate. Up to about 300 mm the sub-pixel geometry survives; from 500 to 800 mm onwards the resolution gain evaporates, though the noise and colour gains remain. For the Moon, track at lunar rate, not sidereal (the Moon moves ~0.55"/s against the stars); the legitimate use case is the mineral moon, where the saturation stretch amplifies the chrominance noise that multishot reduces twice over. For maximum lunar detail, lucky imaging with patch-wise stacking (section 6): it attacks the differential distortion that multishot cannot resolve.

7. Flujo de disparo y revelado del multishot
7. Multishot shooting and processing workflow
Multishot is the only mode in the camera where preparation decides the result: four or eight exposures have to share framing, focus, exposure and a still scene. What follows are checks, not menu paths: the exact names and behaviour depend on the installed firmware and are worth verifying once, timing a real sequence as well to calibrate the between-frames time in the section 8 panel.
Handheld: verified on firmware 4.2.0 that the 96 MP mode delivers its full DNG fired by hand. The following list is written for tripod work, which remains the maximum-efficiency route (section 2b); handheld, the same checks of locked exposure, focus and still scene apply.

Firm tripod and a two-second delay or a remote release: a finger on the button is the commonest cause of a failed merge.
Stabilisation: in tripod mode it is the IBIS that performs the shifts, so it is not switched off. Check the firmware manual for anything else to disable.
Exposure locked in manual, time, aperture and ISO: the frames of the sequence share a single metering, and on automatic a cloud or a pair of headlights shifts the brightness between frames. The same goes for white balance.
Manual focus already set; no focus or exposure bracketing inside the sequence.
ISO as low as the scene allows, and below 3200 if the 96 MP mode is to be used: sub-pixel registration leans on the signal.
Aperture according to the ceiling in the section 8 panel: beyond roughly f/7 the 96 MP mode stops buying detail and the 48 MP one does the same job with half the frames.
Enable the option to also save the single frame: it is the fallback if the merge fails and only costs card space.
Durante la secuencia
During the sequence
Read the duration T given by the section 8 panel and touch neither camera nor tripod during that time, plus the merge lock.
Watch what changes in light, not only what moves: traffic lights, headlights, signs, a fast cloud over a sunlit landscape.
In wind, wait for the lulls: a breeze cycle lasts longer than the sequence, and a leaf breaks registration with displacements of less than a millimetre (section 8 panel).
If somebody crosses the frame, shoot again: the algorithm masks that area with a single frame and there the image is interpolated Bayer once more.
Después, al revelar
Afterwards, in processing
Inspect at 100 % the edges of leaves, water, people and repetitive textures: motion artefacts show up as double contours or as visibly less resolved patches.
Compare the suspect area with the saved single frame. If multishot does not win there, the single frame is the keeper.
Check how the converter opens the 96 MP DNG: verify that it arrives at full resolution and with the camera colour profile before building the usual workflow on top.
Measure once, with your own card and firmware, how much each file takes and how long the merge lasts: those are the two figures the section 8 panel can only estimate.
And not the sky. For any night sky, single frames below the NPF limit of section 5 and external stacking: the Siril manual is the step-by-step, and section 6 compares the macOS alternatives. Multishot does not fail there by a small margin: the sidereal drift during the sequence is measured in pixels, not in fractions.
8. Qué modo elegir en fotografía general y paisaje
8. Which mode to choose in general and landscape photography
The short answer: the default mode for almost everything is the native 24 MP sensor. Multishot is only switched on when three conditions hold at once: a scene static for several seconds, a destination that uses the resolution or the cleanliness (large print, heavy crop, reproduction) and, for the 96 MP mode, a lens-and-aperture combination that resolves above the native Nyquist.
Why the aperture decides between 48 and 96 MP
With a 5.94 µm pitch the native Nyquist is at 84 lp/mm and that of the 96 MP mode at 168. Diffraction imposes on full frame a megapixel ceiling that does not depend on the sensor: 864 mm² · (2·0.404/(λN))², that is, the pixels that fit if 50 % contrast is accepted as sharp. At 550 nm that is 117 Mpx at f/4, 59 at f/5.6, 29 at f/8 and 15 at f/11. The 96 MP mode cannot deliver more than that ceiling, and neither can native: at f/4 the 96 is used whole against the 24.6 of native (×3.9); at f/5.6 it delivers 59 (×2.4); at f/8 it delivers 29 (×1.2, already marginal); at f/11 it delivers 15 and not even the native 24.6 are used. The two borders at 550 nm: up to f/7.1 the 96 MP mode delivers one and a half times native, and from f/8.7 the ceiling falls below the sensor itself. The usual landscape apertures sit just beyond that border; the assistant below applies exactly this calculation, and the diffraction and aperture tab develops it with charts and with the other cameras.
Why movement decides between multishot and native sensor
Leaves, water, fast clouds, grass, people or traffic move between exposures and the merge algorithm cannot resolve it: it masks the zone with data from a single frame, so that region becomes upscaled 24 MP Bayer again, or leaves artefacts. The 96 MP sequence (8 frames) is longer and more vulnerable than the 48 MP one (4 frames). In landscape with moderate wind the 48 MP mode usually comes out clean and the 96 MP one does not.

Situación
Modo
Motivo
Uso general, gente, calle, viaje, cualquier cosa a pulso con prisa
24 MP nativo
48 o 96 MP a pulso

Situation

Reason
General use, people, street, travel, anything handheld in a hurry
24 MP native
Multishot demands a still scene and several seconds; its advantage does not offset the risk of artefacts or the merge time.
Landscape on a tripod, still air, quality lens at f/4 to f/5.6, large print
96 MP tripod
The format's diffraction ceiling is 117 Mpx at f/4 and 59 at f/5.6: the mode delivers between four and two and a half times native, on top of full RGB colour.
Landscape on a tripod at f/8 or smaller
48 MP tripod
At f/8 the format ceiling is 29 Mpx and the 96 MP mode delivers only ×1.2 over native: diffraction eats the additional detail. The 48 MP one gives full colour and one stop of SNR with half the frames and less risk.
Landscape with wind, water or moving clouds
48 MP, or 24 MP native if the movement is broad
Shorter sequence, lower chance of artefacts. With a lot of movement, no multishot is reliable.
Dark interior, night architecture, static scene without tripod
48 or 96 MP handheld
Handheld averaging is measured: 1.2 to 1.3 stops in the shadows with the 96 mode (section 2b); the 48 one, with half the frames, tolerates any residual movement better.
Architecture, art, reproduction, studio product on a tripod
96 MP tripod, low ISO
Controlled scene, controlled light, selectable aperture; the mode delivers everything it promises.
Any night sky

Practical cost to bear in mind: a 96 MP DNG takes about four times the native size, the merge locks the camera for several seconds and ISO is limited to 3200. Hence it is wise to also save the single frame, an option the camera offers, as a fallback if the merge fails.
Sequence budget: how long it lasts and how much stillness it asks for
"A scene static for several seconds" is the condition that really decides between 24, 48 and 96 MP, and it is worth having in numbers. With the shutter speed and the mode, the sequence lasts T = n·(t + between-frames time). During that while no detail of the scene may move on the sensor by more than the registration tolerance, half a pixel by default. Translated through the focal length and the distance, that tolerance becomes a maximum subject speed in millimetres per second: with that one can already say whether a leaf in a breeze, the water of a river or a standing person are in or out.
T = n · (t + tlectura) vmáx = tol · p · s / (f · T) [mm/s] desplazamiento tolerado = vmáx · Ttolerated displacement = vmáx · Tderiva del cielo = 15,041 · T / escalasky drift = 15.041 · T / scale [px]

The between-frames time is the only estimated parameter in the panel: it depends on the firmware, the chosen shutter and the card. The default, 0.2 s, is a reasonable order of magnitude for the electronic shutter; it is worth timing a real sequence and adjusting it. Everything else is data from the shot.

The table recomputes with the aperture and the ISO of the assistant and with the shutter speed and distance of the sequence panel; the highlighted row is the one the assistant recommends.
Limits and assumptions: how all of the above is computed
Sensor. Leica redondea a 24 MP.
Sensor. 36×24 mm format, 864 mm², 5.94 µm pitch, 24.6 MP and λ = 550 nm by default, the same values used by the sensor data and diffraction tabs. Leica rounds to 24 MP.
Megapixel ceiling. 864 · (2·0.404/(λN))², the pixels that fit in the format if 50 % contrast is accepted as sharp (MTF50 of a circular pupil, at 0.404 times the cut-off frequency 1/(λN)). Effective megapixels = the smaller of the nominal figure and that ceiling. It is a reasonable convention, not a law: with a 30 % threshold the ceilings double, and the qualitative conclusions hardly move.
Critical aperture and Airy disc. The verdict in section 4 compares the Rayleigh criterion, 1.22·λN, with the pixel pitch; the critical aperture is N = p/(1.22λ) = f/8.9 for this sensor. That is a different convention from the megapixel ceiling, which is why the two borders do not coincide exactly: f/8.9 measures when detail starts to merge within a pixel, f/8.7 when the format stops delivering the nominal 24.6 Mpx.
The lens. Gaussian model MTFlens(ν) = exp(−(ν/ν₀)²) fitted to equal the slider percentage at 84 lp/mm; it is multiplied by the diffraction MTF and the point where the product falls to 50 % is found. It is an order of magnitude, not a measurement: published charts stop at 40 lp/mm and 84 has to be extrapolated. With the slider at 100 % the perfect optics of the diffraction tab are recovered exactly.
Signal-to-noise gain. Ideal √N as reference, with no fixed-pattern noise or dark current. For the 96 MP handheld mode there is a measurement on a real pair (section 2b): a factor of 2.3 to 2.5 at equal area, 70 to 80 % of the ideal, with white noise verified by autocorrelation. The +1 EV of the 48 MP mode remains a reading of the frame budget, still to be measured; the sensor's noise and dynamic-range data are in the data tab.
Time and movement. The sequence duration uses an estimated, configurable between-frames time. The maximum subject speed assumes movement perpendicular to the optical axis and a distant subject (magnification f/s); in macro and reproduction the magnification is far larger and the tolerance falls in the same proportion, besides which the effective aperture grows with magnification and brings the diffraction limit forward.
Manufacturer or third-party data. The ISO 3200 limit at 96 MP, the 12000×8000 px of the file, the merge times and the relative file sizes are figures from documentation and published tests: verify against the installed firmware. Read noise and dynamic range come from PhotonsToPhotos through the data tab.
Modelo frente a medidas
Leica M11 Triple Resolution: binning or resampling? Model against measurements
The Leica M11 writes three DNG sizes from the same 60 MP sensor: L-DNG (60), M-DNG (36) and S-DNG (18). Does the Maestro III perform physical binning, or does it resample? The article’s measurements — difference image of two identical exposures, linear AHD demosaicing, G channel, underexposed patch (μ ≈ 0.08), three frames per mode — say it resamples while applying gentle noise filtering: the real gain sits around 3 dB (half a stop) at medium-to-high ISO, it is identical in M and in S despite the factor of 2 in pixel count, and at base ISO it is nil or negative. This tool lets you explore a photon-transfer model calibrated on those measurements and set it against ideal binning.
What was actually measured. Everything here is measured on an M11 (Maestro III). The Q3, the Q3 43 and the SL3 carry the same 60 MP sensor and write the same three sizes (9528×6328, 7416×4928, 5272×3498), but with Maestro IV: they have not been measured, so on them the ≈3 dB gain is a hypothesis to be checked with this same method, not a datum. The M11 Monochrom has no colour mosaic and no demosaicing: it falls outside the model.
The gain is a shadow figure. The ≈3 dB of M and S are measured on a patch at μ ≈ 0.08, that is −3.6 EV below saturation. In midtones photon noise dominates and gentle filtering changes little of what you see: that has not been measured. Moving this slider shifts the L curve and the simulation, but not the gain, which the model assumes independent of exposure.
Sensor efectivo (calibración)
Effective sensor (calibration)
FWCef and σr are effective values of the G channel after demosaicing, fitted to the three L-DNG measurements; γ < 1 captures the sensor falling somewhat less steeply than pure photon behaviour (dual conversion gain). They are not factory data.
Simulación visual
Visual simulation
The noise comes from a seeded congruential generator (never Math.random): the same settings always reproduce the same image, as everywhere else in this repository.
That M and S measure almost the same — and that S falls far below its dashed ideal-binning curve — is the signature that no physical binning takes place: the Maestro III resamples with noise filtering of fixed strength, independent of the reduction factor.
Ganancia de SNR frente a L-DNG
SNR gain over L-DNG
Ideal binning of k pixels would give +10·log₁₀(k) dB: +2.2 dB in M (k = 5/3) and +5.2 dB in S (k = 10/3). What was measured: ≈ +3 dB in both at ISO ≥ 1600, and nil or negative gain at ISO 64. The measured linear ratios (L→M 1.28×, L→S 1.81×) are non-integer: on their own they rule out clean 2×2 binning.
Rango dinámico ingenieril por ISO (medido)
Engineering dynamic range by ISO (measured)
Measured data only; the axis starts at 30 dB. At base ISO the three modes tie; at high ISO M and S gain 1.7 to 2.7 dB of DR over L — consistent with noise filtering in the shadows, not binning.
Todo reducido a 18 Mpx: comparación a tamaño común (medido)
Everything reduced to 18 MP: comparison at a common size (measured)
L y M reducidos con Lanczos a 18 Mpx, S nativo. A ISO 64 gana L→18 (35,81 dB); a ISO 1600 y 6400 gana M→18.
L and M reduced with Lanczos to 18 MP, S native. At ISO 64, L→18 wins (35.81 dB); at ISO 1600 and 6400, M→18 wins. S-DNG comes first in no case.
The resolution you actually need is set by the destination, not the sensor: if the destination is an A3 print viewed at one metre, check how many pixels it takes in From sensor to paper.
Qué DNG pongo ahora
Which DNG do I set right now
Noise alone does not answer this. The ISO comes from the slider on the left; the aperture decides how much detail reaches the sensor (computed by the diffraction tab with the same practical ceiling, 550 nm) and the destination of the print decides how many pixels are needed. Here the three come together.
Tarjeta contada a 1 GB = 1000 MB.
None of the three figures is measured, the L one included: it comes neither from the M11 spec sheet nor from any calculation. M11 DNGs use lossless compression and the size depends on the scene and on the ISO, so all three fields are a starting point you should replace with the average size of your own files (check the properties of one of your DNGs in each mode). As long as you leave M and S alone, editing L recomputes them in proportion to pixel count (0.606× and 0.306×); that proportionality overestimates M and S, because the M-DNG and the S-DNG come out already resampled and noise-filtered, so they compress better per pixel than the L-DNG and more of them fit on the card than the table says. Card counted at 1 GB = 1000 MB. This is the only reason to set S-DNG: on quality it never wins.
Visual simulation of the shadow patch, at a common size (18 MP)
A synthetic patch (gradient, faint texture and a central band of bars) generated at “60 MP” with Poisson noise plus read noise at the chosen ISO, then reduced ×1.81 linear along three paths: L downsampled with Lanczos-3, the “Maestro” pipeline (gentle Gaussian pre-filter + bilinear decimation) and ideal binning (block average). The SNR of each tile is measured as in the article, by the difference image of two independent realisations. The “Maestro” pre-filter is modulated by the calibrated gain: at base ISO it barely filters.
Detalle conservado.
Detail retained. The bars have a period of 5.0 px at “60 MP”, which after the reduction becomes 2.8 px (0.36 cycles/px): below the output Nyquist, so what survives is resolved detail and not aliasing. The percentage on each tile is the amplitude of that sinusoid in the output divided by its amplitude in the original patch, measured by least-squares projection onto sine and cosine at the known frequency, and computed on the noise-free patch: it is the MTF of the path at that frequency and does not depend on the realisation. It is the counterpart of the noise figure: the path that cleans the most is the one that leaves the least detail.
Warning: the simulated SNR is not the measured one. This simulation generates white per-pixel noise with no demosaicing, and white noise averages down far better than the article’s real noise, which is correlated by the AHD. That is why Lanczos gains ≈ +6 dB here when reducing to 18 MP where the article measures +2.39 dB, and why the “Maestro” path can come out above ideal binning, which is not what happens in the camera. The figures that count are those in the measured tables; this simulation is here to show what each path looks like — grain and detail — not to quantify the gain.

Photon transfer. SNR = S/√(S + σr²), in dB 20·log₁₀, with S = FWCef · 2EV · (64/ISO)γ signal electrons and σr of read noise. Decibel convention: the SNR is a ratio of amplitudes, so SNR(dB) = 20·log₁₀(μ/σ). Averaging k independent pixels divides σ by √k: the improvement is 20·log₁₀(√k) = 10·log₁₀(k) dB. With k = 60/36 = 5/3 that yields +2.22 dB (M) and with k = 60/18 = 10/3, +5.23 dB (S): the article’s “+2.2” and “+5.2”.

Why 36 MP and not only 18. The 18 MP comparison shrinks L and M alike and is the one the article measured; but the size where M-DNG and L-DNG really compete is 36 MP, M’s native size. There is no measurement there: the L→36 row is a model. It is computed by reducing L with Lanczos-3 at ×1.289 (√(60.3/36.3)), which with white noise would give +3.18 dB (Σw² = 0.693 per axis), and then applying the observed efficiency of the measured reduction to 18 MP: the article measures +2.39 dB where white-noise theory would give +6.13 dB, that is 39 % — real noise is correlated by the demosaicing and averages down less well. Uncertainty ≈ ±1 dB; still to be measured.

Diffraction and aperture: the Airy disc as the ceiling
With a perfect lens, the only thing limiting detail is the Airy disc, and its size depends only on the aperture and the colour of the light. That sets, for each aperture, a megapixel ceiling that no sensor, no multishot and no stacking can exceed. This sheet puts that ceiling beside each camera and each mode, lets you compare two apertures at once, and shows what the sensor records: from there come the three answers, how far to stop down, when multishot pays, and what stacking can and cannot do.
Modes of the same camera (the M11's L/M/S-DNG, the SL3-S's 24/48/96 MP) share the sensor: what changes is the effective pixel pitch at which the image is sampled, and that is all diffraction sees. The ceilings depend only on sensor area: they are the same for every body of a given format. The large values and the verdict refer to aperture A; B appears in the comparisons.

A against B: two apertures, the same camera
What changes between the two chosen apertures. "Detail at the ends of the scene" combines diffraction with the geometric defocus of the nearest subject and of infinity for the given focal length and distance, focusing at the optimum point between them: it is what actually reaches the foreground and the background of that scene.
El disco sobre los píxeles
The disc on the pixels
Two points of light separated by exactly the Rayleigh criterion (the radius of the Airy disc), drawn to scale on each sensor's grid; each pixel lights up according to the light it integrates. When both points fall on the same pixel or on adjacent pixels with no dark one between them, the sensor does not separate them even though the optics do. Each square is 40 µm across.

A frequency sweep, from 20 to 260 line pairs per millimetre over half a millimetre of sensor, as each sensor would record it with a perfect lens at apertures A and B: diffraction extinguishes contrast as frequency rises, and beyond each sensor's Nyquist what remains is aliasing (the false, slower beats typical of a sensor without a low-pass filter). The first strip is the reference without diffraction or pixels. The triangle marks each sensor's Nyquist.
Contraste frente a frecuencia
Contrast against frequency
The diffraction MTF at the two apertures, with each sensor's Nyquist as a vertical line. What a sensor can use is the contrast left to the left of its line; the shaded band, between the SL3-S's native Nyquist and that of its 96 Mpx, is exactly what multishot buys, and you can see how much contrast there is inside it at each aperture.
Megapíxeles efectivos frente al diafragma
Effective megapixels against aperture
The grey line is the format's practical ceiling: it falls as 1/N², and each sensor's curve is flat until it touches it and then follows it. One stop beyond the crossing leaves half the useful pixels. The dashed grey line is the hard limit, the absolute maximum no technique exceeds. Thin curves are the site's reference bodies; the thick one, the chosen camera. The verticals are apertures A and B; the dashed ochre one, the geometric optimum for the requested depth.

For your scene: sharp from the nearest subject to infinity
Focusing at the optimum point between the nearest subject and infinity, both ends of the range get the same geometric defocus. Opening up, that defocus rules; stopping down, diffraction does. The curve combines both in quadrature and measures the detail at those ends, which is what limits the whole picture when foreground and background matter equally; its maximum is the geometric optimum, and the in-focus zone keeps the detail of the grey curve (diffraction alone). The horizontal line is what a focus stack at the critical aperture would give: all nominal pixels across the whole range, in exchange for the frames indicated.

El disco de Airy como techo
The Airy disc as the ceiling
A perfect lens does not form points, it forms Airy discs: 84 % of a star's light falls within a circle of diameter 2.44·λ·N. At 550 nm and f/8 that is 10.7 µm, whatever the focal length, format or brand. Two details are still distinguishable when separated by 1.22·λ·N (Rayleigh criterion); closer, they merge. In MTF language: diffraction passes less and less contrast as frequency rises, and at the cut-off frequency νc = 1/(λ·N) it passes nothing. At f/8 and 550 nm, νc = 227 line pairs per millimetre; at half that frequency the contrast is already only 39 %, and 50 % contrast (the MTF50, what the eye perceives as "sharp") is reached at 0.404·νc = 92 lp/mm.
Since each frequency ν converts into useful pixels at 2ν per millimetre on each axis, a sensor of area A has a ceiling of A·(2ν)² pixels at that frequency. For the 24×36 format at 550 nm two numbers are worth remembering:
Hard limit (cut-off frequency): ≈ 11,400 / N² megapixels, six times more. f/8 → 179; f/11 → 94; f/16 → 45; f/22 → 24. Above it there is no information whatsoever in the image; below it there is, but with a contrast that tends to zero as the limit is approached.
Para otros formatos, multiplica por el cociente de áreas: APS-C ×0,42; micro 4/3 ×0,26; formato medio 44×33 ×1,68.
For other formats, multiply by the area ratio: APS-C ×0.42; micro 4/3 ×0.26; 44×33 medium format ×1.68.
Everything that follows derives from those two ceilings. A sensor is well used while its nominal megapixels stay below the practical ceiling; the aperture where it crosses is its critical aperture, and it coincides with the Rayleigh criterion set equal to the pixel pitch. For the M11 (60 Mpx) it is f/5.6; for the SL3-S at 24 Mpx, f/8.9; for its 96 Mpx multishot, f/4.4.
Multishot: cuándo tiene sentido, según el disco
Multishot: when it makes sense, according to the disc
The SL3-S has two multishots that answer two different questions, and the Airy disc decides only one of them.
48 Mpx (four frames, whole-pixel shifts)
Sampling does not change: each pixel still measures 5.94 µm, but now it has all three colours measured instead of two of them interpolated. It gains colour resolution (red and blue go from being sampled every other pixel to every pixel), removes colour moiré and adds four exposures, a full stop of signal-to-noise. None of that depends on the aperture: at f/16 it contributes exactly the same as at f/4. Diffraction is an argument neither for nor against; the arguments are the static scene and the tripod.
96 Mpx (eight frames, half-pixel shifts)
Here sampling does change: the effective pitch drops to 2.97 µm and Nyquist rises from 84 to 168 lp/mm. It is only useful if diffraction leaves contrast in that new band, between 84 and 168 lp/mm (the shaded band in the contrast chart). Compared with the format's practical ceiling: at f/4 the ceiling is 117 Mpx, the 96 are fully used; at f/5.6 the ceiling is 59, the mode delivers 59 against the native 24, still worthwhile; at f/8 the ceiling is 29, the gain over 24 is marginal; at f/11 the ceiling is 15, not even the native 24 are used and the eight frames buy nothing. The boundary aperture, where the 96 delivers 1.5 times the native, is f/7.1 at 550 nm.
The M11's 60 Mpx are the same problem
The L-DNG is the M11's "96 mode": it contributes over the 36 Mpx M-DNG while the ceiling exceeds 36, i.e. up to f/7.2, and over the 18 Mpx S-DNG while the ceiling exceeds 18, up to f/10. At f/11 and beyond, the 60 Mpx file only takes up more disk.
In red or blue light
The ceilings scale as 1/λ²: at 650 nm they are 28 % lower and at 450 nm 49 % higher. A scene lit by sodium or through a red filter brings the limit forward almost half a stop; blue sky pushes it back by as much.
Apilar: tres apilados distintos frente al mismo techo
Stacking: three different stacks against the same ceiling
Focus stacking
It is the only way out when depth of field asks for an aperture smaller than the critical one. Instead of stopping down to f/12 and keeping 12 Mpx, you shoot at f/5.6 with all 60 and shift focus. How many frames are needed is given by k ≈ f² / (2·N·c·s), with f the focal length, N the aperture, c the circle of confusion (here two pixels, one line pair) and s the distance to the nearest subject, all in millimetres, to cover from s to infinity. With 35 mm, f/5.6 and 3 m it comes to five frames; with 90 mm at 3 m, thirty-three, and there stacking stops being reasonable in the field. The calculator shows it above for your focal length and distance, and the scene chart shows how much detail it buys over the single frame.
Averaging stacks (astro, synthetic long exposure)
Averaging n frames improves signal-to-noise by √n, and nothing else: the Airy disc is the same in every frame and so is the sampling, so resolution does not change even with a thousand frames. What does change is what can be done afterwards: with plenty of signal, deconvolution can give contrast back to the frequencies diffraction attenuated, and move from the practical ceiling towards the hard limit. That is the real margin, six times in pixels, and it is all the margin there is: above the cut-off frequency there is no signal to recover, only amplified noise. In astro-landscape, moreover, the disc is seldom the limit: at f/2 it measures 2.7 µm, less than the M11's pixel, and stars are one-pixel points limited by sampling and tracking, not by the optics.
If the image moves by fractions of a pixel between frames, the stack can reconstruct a finer sampling: it is the 96 Mpx multishot done by hand, with the advantage of not needing a moving sensor and the disadvantage of needing sub-pixel registration and many frames. The same ceiling as multishot rules it: it only contributes while the format's practical ceiling at that aperture exceeds the native megapixels, and never, with any number of frames, beyond the hard limit.
Límites y supuestos
Limits and assumptions
Estimación, no medida
Perfect lens
All of the above assumes aberration-free optics, which is why the wide-open ceilings (238 Mpx at f/2.8) are never reached: a real lens delivers less wide open than diffraction would allow and improves on stopping down, until diffraction dominates again. That crossing is its "sweet spot", on full frame between f/4 and f/5.6 for today's good lenses. Diffraction gives the upper limit; the lens, how far below it you stay.
Estimate, not measurement
The MTF50 criterion and the two-pixel circle of confusion are reasonable conventions, not laws: with a 30 % threshold the practical ceilings double; with 10 %, they quadruple. The qualitative conclusions (which mode contributes, where each sensor crosses) barely move; the concrete numbers are order-of-magnitude. In the simulations, the pixel is treated as a square integrator without microlens or Bayer mosaic, and the disc illumination uses the exact Airy pattern.
What depends on nothing else
The Airy disc does not depend on focal length, sensor size or focus distance (except in macro, where N grows with magnification: at 1:1 the effective aperture is twice the marked one and all limits move one stop earlier). It depends only on N and λ. Format enters only because a larger sensor fits more discs: the ceiling is per unit area.
Nyquist and aliasing
A sensor without a low-pass filter, like all three Leicas, records aliasing when the optics leave contrast above its Nyquist: exactly the "no limitation" zone of the table, and the beats seen in the simulated chart. Stopping down to the critical aperture is also the way to make diffraction act as a free anti-aliasing filter.
Cómo se calcula
How it is computed
Disco de Airy y Rayleigh
Diámetro 2,44·λ·N; resolución de Rayleigh 1,22·λ·N. Diafragma crítico N = p/(1,22·λ) (1,49·p a 550 nm, con p en µm); claramente limitado al doble. Intensidad del disco I(r) = [2·J₁(x)/x]², con x = π·r/(λ·N).
MTF de difracción
Pupila circular: MTF(ν) = (2/π)·[arccos(x) − x·√(1 − x²)], x = ν·λ·N.
Techos
Área del formato A (864 mm² en 24×36). Techo práctico A·(2·0,404/(λN))²; límite duro A·(2/(λN))².
Airy disc and Rayleigh
Diameter 2.44·λ·N; Rayleigh resolution 1.22·λ·N. Critical aperture N = p/(1.22·λ) (1.49·p at 550 nm, p in µm); clearly limited at twice that. Disc intensity I(r) = [2·J₁(x)/x]², with x = π·r/(λ·N).
Diffraction MTF
Circular pupil: MTF(ν) = (2/π)·[arccos(x) − x·√(1 − x²)], x = ν·λ·N. MTF50 at ν = 0.404/(λ·N); cut-off at νc = 1/(λ·N). Evaluated at the sensor's Nyquist, 1/(2p). The simulated chart applies that MTF to a linear frequency sweep and averages the signal within each pixel.
Ceilings
Format area A (864 mm² for 24×36). Practical ceiling A·(2·0.404/(λN))²; hard limit A·(2/(λN))². Effective megapixels = min(nominal, practical ceiling), which equals nominal·min(1, (Ncritical/N)²).
Depth of field and scene
Focusing at the optimum point between the nearest subject s and infinity, the defocus circle at both ends is c = f²/(2·N·s). It is combined with the disc in quadrature, b = √(c² + (2.44λN)²), ν = 1/b is taken as the useful frequency and the scene megapixels are min(nominal, A·(2ν)²). The maximum of that curve is the geometric optimum N ≈ 0.61·f/√s (f in mm, s in m). Stack frames k = f²/(2·Ncritical·c·s) with c = 2p, rounded up.

Qué hace un filtro de densidad neutra
What a neutral-density filter does
An ND filter attenuates light by a factor that, ideally, does not depend on wavelength. It is described in three equivalent ways: by its factor (ND1000), by the stops of exposure it removes (10) or by its optical density (OD 3.0). The three relations are exact; what is not exact is the commercial naming, which rounds 210 = 1024 to 1000. An honest "ND1000" is an ND1024, and some manufacturers label it so.
OD = −log10TT = 2−n factor = 2n = 10OD
Optical density is the useful quantity because it is additive: two stacked filters add their ODs. And it is additive outside the visible too, which will have consequences in the next section. The exposure time is multiplied by the factor: with ND1000, 1/125 s becomes 8 s.

Dónde deja de ser neutro
Where it stops being neutral
"Neutral" is specified between roughly 400 and 700 nm. Outside that band the optical density is not guaranteed, and in most constructions it drops. The sensor, as we will see, stays sensitive up to nearly 1100 nm, so what happens between 700 and 1000 nm is not a spectroscopic curiosity: it is signal that reaches the photodiodes.
Each manufacturing technology fails in a different way:
Dyed absorbing glass. Absorption comes from metal ions dissolved in the glass, with absorption bands centred in the visible. Beyond 700 nm the absorption coefficient collapses, and the OD with it. They also tend to absorb a little more in the blue, adding a warm cast already in the visible.
Evaporated metal film. A thin layer of nickel-chromium alloy deposited in vacuum. It attenuates by absorption and reflection, with a fairly flat response in the visible and a slow rise in transmittance towards the NIR. It is the basis of most mid- and high-range photographic NDs.
Metal with dielectric IR cut (IRND). A dielectric stack that reflects the near infrared is added to the metal film. The OD in the NIR can be equal to or above that in the visible. It is what manufacturers advertise as "IR cut" or "IRND". Its weak point is the angle of incidence, treated below.
Variable ND (two polarisers). Iodine-in-polyvinyl-alcohol polarisers stop polarising above 750 nm. Two crossed polarisers that block OD 3 or more in the visible are almost transparent at 900 nm. The more the variable ND is closed, the larger the excess leakage. Add to that the cross pattern on wide angles, inherent to the angular dependence of polarisation.
Dyed resin. Square resin filters use organic dyes, the most NIR-transparent materials of the whole list. It is the worst case.
Δ is the quantity that matters. An excess of 2 means that, relative to the visible, infrared gets through the filter a hundred times better than it should. Stacking two filters does not fix it: the excesses add up just like the densities.
El filtro del propio sensor
The sensor's own filter
Silicon has a band gap of 1.12 eV. A photon with less energy does not generate an electron-hole pair, and that limit corresponds to 1107 nm. Between 700 and 1000 nm the quantum efficiency is still high, around half the maximum. With nothing to stop it, a camera would see the near infrared almost as well as red.
What stops it is the filter stack glued over the sensor, which combines two mechanisms:
Vidrio absorbente azul verdoso.
Blue-green absorbing glass. It absorbs through electronic transitions of copper in the glass, with maximum absorption between 750 and 950 nm. It obeys the Beer-Lambert law: optical density is proportional to thickness. A 0.5 mm glass blocks half the OD of a 1 mm one, that is, it passes the square root of the transmittance.
Reflective dielectric stack. Dozens of alternating high- and low-index layers, tuned to reflect a band starting around 650 to 690 nm. It is very effective and does not depend on thickness, but its cut-off edge shifts with the angle of incidence.
The colour filters of the Bayer mosaic do not help: they are organic dyes and become transparent in the NIR. The red filter transmits continuously from about 600 nm; the green and blue filters reopen secondary windows beyond 800 nm. That is why a leak concentrated between 700 and 800 nm raises the R channel almost exclusively, giving red or magenta, whereas a leak beyond 850 nm raises all three channels and produces an almost grey veil.
Por qué el grosor es un compromiso
Why thickness is a compromise
If blocking infrared were all that mattered, the absorbing glass would be thick and the matter settled. It is not, because a plane-parallel plate placed in a converging beam introduces aberrations, above all astigmatism and coma, which grow with thickness and with the angle of incidence. Symmetrical rangefinder lenses, with the exit pupil very close to the sensor, send beams tilted 30 or 40 degrees into the corners. A thick stack smears those corners.
The historic case is the 2006 Leica M8: to preserve the corner performance of M lenses it mounted an absorbing filter of only 0.5 mm, and the result was an excess of infrared that tinted black synthetic fabrics magenta. The manufacturer's remedy was external: UV/IR-cut filters screwed onto every lens. Later models thickened the stack and improved the coating, and the problem became marginal. With a leaking ND, that margin runs out.

Set the thickness to 0.5 mm and disable the dielectric, with the M8 preset, to reproduce that scenario qualitatively. With the dielectric active the residue of the reflection band is small, but outside that band, beyond 1000 nm, the absorbing glass is in charge again. The preset thicknesses are estimates from conversion workshops, not factory data: a modern Leica M stack is around 0.8 mm, and for the Q3 and the SL3-S there is no published figure, so they stay on the generic 1.0 mm. The lesson of the panel is that, with the dielectric active, thickness barely changes the result; the M11 is not the M8 because it has a dielectric, not because it has more glass.
Simulador de dominante
Cast simulator
The signal of each channel is an integral over wavelength of the product of every factor in the chain: scene radiance, ND transmittance, sensor-filter transmittance, quantum efficiency and the response of the pixel's colour filter.
Sc = ∫ E(λ) ρ(λ) TND(λ) Tsensor(λ) QE(λ) fc(λ) dλ
Without an ND, the infrared part of that integral is negligible against the visible because the sensor filter reduces it by three or four orders of magnitude. With an ND1000 that has an excess Δ, the visible drops a thousandfold and the infrared only 1000/10Δ. The ratio between them is multiplied by 10Δ, and what was negligible no longer is.
The simulator sets the white balance on a grey card without the filter, with the same sensor, and then compares the colour of each scene element with and without the ND, at compensated exposure. The resulting deviation is the cast introduced by the filter, separated from the object's own colour. The effect depends on the scene: vegetation reflects up to ten times more in the NIR than in the red because of the chlorophyll absorption edge at 700 nm, black synthetic fabrics are black only in the visible, and blue sky, dominated by Rayleigh scattering proportional to λ−4, is poor in infrared. Clouds, on the other hand, scatter by Mie and are almost neutral up to the NIR: they do not serve as an infrared-free reference.
The cast is not the only damage. Diffraction is proportional to wavelength, so contamination at 850 nm diffracts 55 percent more than green, and longitudinal chromatic aberration leaves it focused on another plane: it arrives as a defocused halo over the whole image. A leaking ND does not only tint; it also veils, and that veil is corrected by no white balance. The critical and optimum apertures are computed in the diffraction calculator.

The knee of the variable ND appears when the requested density exceeds what two polarisers can deliver in the infrared, around eleven stops.
How to read it. If the R/G deviation is noticeable but the IR fraction is small, the cast is in the visible and a white balance corrects it. If the IR fraction is large, the cast depends on the object, not on the illuminant, and no global balance removes it: compare the same filter on foliage and on sky. The colour swatches are indicative, with no camera colour matrix.
Ángulo de incidencia: focales y esquinas
Angle of incidence: focal lengths and corners
Everything that attenuates by absorption is indifferent to angle, except for the slightly longer optical path inside the glass. Everything that attenuates by interference is not. In a dielectric stack the reflection condition depends on the optical path between layers, which goes as n d cos θ', and the cut-off edge shifts towards the blue as the tilt increases:
λc(θ) = λc(0) · √(1 − sen2θ / nef2)
With nef ≈ 1.85, at 35 degrees the edge recedes by 5 percent. A cut designed at 690 nm ends up at 642 nm and eats part of the red channel. This happens in two different places, and it pays not to confuse them:
In the ND filter screwed in front of the lens. The relevant angle is the half field angle: the corner of the frame reaches the filter tilted by arctan(21.6 / f) on full frame. A 28 mm puts the corners at 38 degrees; a 90 mm, at 13. If the ND has a dielectric IR cut, on a wide angle that cut invades the red in the corners and a radial gradient towards cyan appears, or towards magenta if the coating edge sat very close to the red.
In the sensor filter. Here the angle is fixed not by the focal length but by the distance from the exit pupil to the sensor plane. A symmetrical rangefinder lens, with the pupil at 30 or 40 mm, tilts the corner beams 30 or 35 degrees. A retrofocus SLR lens of the same focal length, with the pupil at 60 or 70 mm, tilts them 18 or 20. This is the origin of the corner cyan drift that became famous with symmetrical wide angles on sensors with an aggressive dielectric cut.
The two drifts overlap, and neither can be corrected with a global white balance because they vary with position in the frame. They can be corrected with a colour-vignetting profile measured on a uniform surface, which is what cameras that can code the mounted lens do.

Corner drift against focal length, with the pupil held fixed
The exit pupil stays at the chosen value while the focal length is swept, because they are two independent things: the tilt at the sensor filter is set by the pupil, and the tilt at the ND by the focal length. That is why the bare-sensor line is flat and only the one including the ND moves. The difference between the two is the only thing that decides which filter to buy; the bands mark 3 and 8 percentage points. For the Q3 there is no published exit-pupil figure for the 43 mm: use the manual values.
The corner drift is computed on a uniform grey card, with the same white balance as at the centre. Without a dielectric filter on the sensor and with an absorbing or metal ND, the only angular effect left is the longer path through the absorbing glass, which blocks a little more infrared in the corners, of opposite sign and much smaller. The model assumes an aggressive dielectric cut; sensors designed for symmetrical lenses soften that edge and rely more on the absorbing glass, and cameras that code the lens correct the rest by profile.
Cómo medirlo con la cámara
How to measure it with the camera
No manufacturer publishes the transmittance curve beyond 700 nm. What exists are statements of mechanism, such as "equivalent attenuation in visible and infrared" or "infrared blocking layer", and qualitative comparisons of raw files. The camera lets you go further with three zero-cost tests. All require linear raw, manual exposure, fixed ISO, fixed white balance and black-level subtraction.
Medida puntual con un LED infrarrojo
Spot measurement with an infrared LED
A remote control emits in a narrow band, almost always at 940 nm; a security-camera illuminator, at 850. Photograph the LED in a dark room with and without the filter, same exposure, and read the mean value of the LED in the raw once the black is subtracted. Quantum efficiency and the sensor filter appear in numerator and denominator, so they cancel:
If with the filter nothing remains above the noise, the result is a bound: OD ≥ log10(DNwithout / 3σ). To get the value, lengthen the exposure with the filter by a known factor and add its logarithm. Four things invalidate the test: the remote emits bursts modulated at 38 kHz, not continuous light, so long exposures with the button held down are needed; the emission cone is around 15 degrees and any change of aim ruins the comparison; automatic exposure and JPEG are out; and at 940 nm the dynamic range is narrow because the sensor itself already cuts hard. What matters in the end is not OD(940) in isolation, but the excess relative to the density measured in the visible on the same filter.

The DN values are linear raw numbers with the black level already subtracted, averaged over the LED disc. If the value with the filter does not exceed three times the background noise, the calculator returns a lower bound instead of a measurement. The extra exposure is the factor by which you lengthened the time with the filter relative to the shot without it: one if you used the same time. The starting values are an example, not a measurement.

Pair of shots: density per channel
Tripod, same scene, manual white balance at a fixed Kelvin, same aperture and ISO. One shot without the filter at t and another with the filter at 2nt, with n the nominal stops. The per-channel ratio between the two linear images returns the effective density of each channel:
ODc = n log10 2 + log10 ( DNc,sin / DNc,con )
The differences between ODR, ODG and ODB are the filter's cast, visible and infrared together. And the dependence of those differences on the photographed object separates the two: a visible cast is the same on a grey card as on a leaf; an infrared cast is larger on the leaf.

The DN values are means of the undemosaiced Bayer mosaic, as given by RawDigger or dcraw -D -4 -T, over uniform, well-exposed patches far from saturation. The black level is subtracted here, not before. The match against the model compares the two per-channel differences with those each technology predicts at that density on the generic 1.0 mm sensor: it is an orientation, not a product identification. The starting values are an example generated with the model itself, not a measurement.

Differential test in a single shot
A scene with sunlit green vegetation and clear blue sky in the same frame. Measure the R/G ratio in the raw on the leaves and on the sky. If it rises only on the vegetation, there is leakage: chlorophyll is the scene's infrared emitter and the Rayleigh sky is not. The test fails with overcast sky, because clouds scatter by Mie and are nearly neutral up to the NIR, and it fails with vegetation in deep shade or dry.

The direction is the one a leak between 700 and 800 nm predicts: red up and blue down on the vegetation, not on the clouds. But the shot cannot prove it, for four accumulated reasons: the white balance was automatic and had already compensated part of the effect; overcast sky is not an infrared-free reference; the mosaic's channel ratios are not colorimetry, and the Bayer red filter already responds at 580 nm, so a leaf can give R/G close to 1 without pathology; and the dark vegetation mixes green leaves with dry grass, genuinely warm. The methodological lesson is that an isolated shot never settles the question. The pair of shots above does.

The calculations on this page are qualitative models with the right functional form and plausible magnitudes, useful for understanding the mechanism and the order of magnitude. They do not replace a measurement. This is what lies behind each curve:
Spectral grid from 380 to 1100 nm in 5 nm steps. Illuminant: black body at 5600 K, without atmospheric absorption bands.
Silicon quantum efficiency: linear interpolation between anchor points, with maximum at 550 to 600 nm and cut-off at 1100 nm.
Bayer mosaic: red as a high-pass from 585 nm; green and blue Gaussian with secondary windows above 800 and 820 nm.
Sensor filter: absorbing glass with OD proportional to thickness and maximum absorption between 800 and 950 nm, plus a dielectric reflection band of OD 2 and 360 nm width, with edge at 690 nm by default (the IRND's is OD 1.8 and 320 nm). Angular shift with nef = 1.85.
ND filters: the nominal OD is multiplied by a shape function specific to each technology. The IRND adds a reflection band of OD 1.8 with edge at 705 nm. The variable ND is modelled as the minimum between the set density and the maximum density two polarisers can reach at that wavelength, about OD 4 in the visible and below 1 beyond 850 nm.
Scene: tabulated reflectances for foliage, dry grass, synthetic fabric, skin and grey card; radiance proportional to λ−4 for clear sky and neutral for cloud.
The colour shown in the swatches is the channel ratio normalised to the grey card, with no colour matrix. It serves to see the direction and size of the drift, not the final colour of a real camera.
Verdict thresholds, the author's criterion and no standard at all. Cast: residual below 2 percentage points and infrared fraction below 2 % = neutral in practice; up to 6 pp or up to 8 % = a cast that depends on the object; above that = infrared leakage. Corners: less than 3 pp of drift added by the ND = imperceptible; more than 8 pp = visible on a smooth sky. Pair of shots: difference between patches below 0.03 in optical density = visible cast, above it = infrared signature.
The residual is the difference between the deviation of a scene element and that of the grey card with the same filter: what is left after a global white balance. The worst case used by the verdict is taken among the chosen scene, foliage and black synthetic fabric.
The corner drift attributable to the ND is the total drift minus that of the bare sensor with the same exit pupil. The sensor's part is corrected by the colour-vignetting profile in cameras that code the lens; the ND's part is not.
Qué es afirmación de fabricante y qué es medidaWhat is a manufacturer's claim and what is a measurement
"Equivalent attenuation in visible and infrared" and "infrared blocking layer" are statements of mechanism by the manufacturers who use them. They indicate design, not a measured optical density.
"High colour fidelity" says nothing about the infrared. It is a claim about the visible.
That a manufacturer also sells a separate UV/IR-cut filter indicates that its ND, on its own, does not close the problem in every case.
Comparisons published by users measure casts in raw files, which is a valid test but integrated over the whole band and scene-dependent. They are not spectral curves.

Sensor stack and angle of incidence: ray tracing, MTF and corner simulation
The model: the lens is represented by its exit pupil (circular, at a distance L from the sensor) and its f-number; the sensor stack, by up to three plane-parallel plates with their own refractive index and dispersion (Cauchy from nd and V). For every image height some 380 real rays (127 pupil positions × 3 wavelengths) are traced to the plane of best focus, and from the impact positions come the RMS spot, the geometric MTF (multiplied by the diffraction limit) and the point spread function with which a corner is simulated. Everything is computed for two sensors, A and B, with the same lens. Without a plate the model is perfect: what you see is solely what the stack adds, that is, the residual left by fitting a lens that was never computed for that thickness. That design thickness is a control: if the lens was already computed with the body's glass, the residual is zero and the page says so.
What spoils the corner is not the glass that is there but the glass that is left over or missing with respect to what the designer assumed. The trace always uses that residual = |stack thickness − design thickness|, with the same distribution of glasses scaled down: the aberrations of a plate are linear in its thickness, and the sign only swaps the sagittal and tangential foci, it does not change the size of the spot. Which lens was computed for which thickness is your hypothesis, not a datum: hence the control.

The geometric MTF is the modulus of the transform of the distribution of impacts; it is multiplied by the diffraction MTF of a circular pupil. It is a reasonable approximation once the geometric spot exceeds the Airy disc, and it somewhat overstates the degradation when the two are comparable. Without a plate the curve would be the diffraction curve, flat across the field.

Recorte de A 36-spoke Siemens star and a fine grid, sampled at the stated pixel pitch and convolved with the point spread function traced for the corner (plus a Gaussian blur equivalent to diffraction). Each of the three traced wavelengths feeds one channel — 486 nm to blue, 588 to green, 656 to red — so lateral chromatic aberration shows up as what it is: a magenta fringe on one side of every radial line and a green one on the other. With three wavelengths the colour is indicative, not colorimetric. The radial direction of the field is the horizontal one: at the edge, astigmatism makes radial and tangential lines lose contrast at different frequencies. Crop of .

How it is computed. Rays from 127 points of a circular pupil (7 hexapolar rings) of radius L/(2N) towards the ideal image point (h, 0), at λF = 486, λd = 588 and λC = 656 nm with weights 1, 2, 1. Vector refraction at every plane surface. At the plane of best focus (the minimum of the variance of the impacts, quadratic in defocus and solved in closed form), or at the plane of best focus for the centre of the field, come the RMS radius about the centroid, the geometric MTF along the radial and tangential directions, and the point spread function. Lateral chromatic aberration: separation between the F and C chief rays. Microlenses: efficiency = exp(−(θ − θdesign)² / (2σ²)) with θdesign = atan(h / Ldesign). Diffraction within the trace (it enters only as a factor in the MTF and as a Gaussian blur in the simulation), reflections and absorption are all omitted.
Mapa: qué objetivo aguanta qué grosor residual
Map: which lens tolerates which residual thickness
Corner spot (2·rRMS, µm) for each exit-pupil distance and each residual thickness of glass, at the f-number, pixel pitch and focus mode set above. The colours repeat the thresholds of the verdict. Read horizontally — how much surplus glass this lens tolerates — and vertically — which lenses survive this body. The highlighted row is your lens; the outlined columns are A's residual (solid) and B's (dashed). The residual is modelled as an equivalent IR-filter plate (nd 1.55, V 50).
A plane-parallel plate has no power: on axis it merely pushes focus back by t·(1 − 1/n), some 0.28 mm per millimetre of glass, and the lens compensates by refocusing. In the corner the beam arrives tilted by θ = arctan(h/L) and that stops being true: the sagittal and tangential foci separate. With Coddington's formulae for a plate, Δzs = t·[1 − cos θ / √(n² − sin²θ)] and Δzt = t·[1 − n²·cos³θ / (n² − sin²θ)3/2]; their difference is the longitudinal astigmatism, zero on axis and rising fast with θ. Hence the two rules that govern this page: everything is proportional to t (twice the glass, twice of everything) and everything grows with the angle, that is, with h and against L. A symmetrical rangefinder design with its pupil at 28 mm looks at the corner from almost 38°; a tele or a retrofocus with the pupil at 150 mm, from 8°, and never notices.
That transverse smear is a longitudinal error seen through the cone of the aperture: it measures roughly Δz/N, so it halves every time you stop down one stop. Diffraction does the opposite, growing with N. That is why there is always an aperture beyond which the stack stops counting, and why the table above is worth reading from top to bottom. The diffraction ceiling — Airy disc, diffraction MTF, critical aperture — is not re-explained here: it is developed in The sensor · diffraction.
The thickness is a compromise, not an oversight. The M8 carried a 0.5 mm cover glass so as not to punish the corners of wide M lenses, and in exchange it let infrared through: synthetic blacks came out magenta and IR/UV filters had to be hung in front of the lens. From the M9 on, the stack is around 0.8 mm of absorbing glass, half of what an SLR carries and a third of a Micro 4/3. That other side of the problem — where the filter stops cutting, the colour drift of dielectric cuts under oblique incidence — is computed in the ND filter and infrared leakage tab.

The useful question is never “how much glass is there” but “how much glass is there in excess”.
M digital (M9…M11), ≈0,8 mm.
Digital M (M9…M11), ≈0.8 mm. A modern M ASPH was computed counting on that glass: choose “digital M (0.8 mm)” and the residual is 0, the corner is the lens's own and this page has nothing to say. A ZM, a Voigtländer or any film-era design was computed with air: choose “film / analogue M or ZM (0 mm)” and the residual is the full 0.8 mm again. That is the difference between the two experiences one reads about in the forums.
Fixed lens (Q3 43 and the like). The lens was computed for its own stack: the residual is zero by construction and the question does not arise. It only comes back if you adapt something to that body, which a fixed lens does not allow.
SL3-S with adapted M lenses. Here there is a real case: residual = TSL3-S − 0.8 mm for a modern M, and the whole of TSL3-S for a ZM or a film-era lens. Leica does not publish that thickness and this site does not invent it: the “Leica SL3 / SL3-S” preset carries a 2.0 mm placeholder, the typical figure for a full-frame mirrorless body, flagged as such so you can edit it. In the meantime the map above exists precisely for this: find the column for the thickness once you know it and read your lens's row. With native L lenses the residual is 0.
Límites del modeloLimits of the model
The lens is perfect. Without a plate the spot is zero, which happens in no real corner: what you see is what the glass adds, and it sums in quadrature with the lens's own aberrations.
The pupil is circular, fixed and does not move with the field: there is no mechanical vignetting, no pupil aberration, no distortion.
The geometric MTF overstates the degradation once the spot is near the Airy disc; below it, trust the verdict, not the decimal.
Everything is linear in thickness: a ±20 % error in t is a ±20 % error in every micron on this page. The default thicknesses are approximate and vary between units.
The microlenses are a Gaussian heuristic on angular mismatch: they compare trends, they do not predict vignetting or colour drift. There are no reflections, no absorption and no dielectric cuts: that is the ND filter tab. The decision recipes and the sources for the thicknesses are in the manual.
